Edward Snowden: The Untold Story

The message arrives on my ?clean machine,? a MacBook Air loaded only with a sophisticated encryption package. ?Change in plans,? my contact says. ?Be in the lobby of the Hotel ______ by 1 pm. Bring a book and wait for ES to find you.? ? ES is Edward Snowden, the most wanted man in the world. For almost nine months, I have been trying to set up an interview with him?traveling to Berlin, Rio de Janeiro twice, and New York multiple times to talk with the handful of his confidants who can arrange a meeting. Among other things, I want to answer a burning question: What drove Snowden to leak hundreds of thousands of top-secret documents, revelations that have laid bare the vast scope of the government?s domestic surveillance programs? In May I received an email from his lawyer, ACLU attorney Ben Wizner, confirming that Snowden would meet me in Moscow and let me hang out and chat with him for what turned out to be three solid days over several weeks. It is the most time that any journalist has been allowed to spend with him since he arrived in Russia in June 2013. But the finer details of the rendezvous remain shrouded in mystery. I landed in Moscow without knowing precisely where or when Snowden and I would actually meet. Now, at last, the details are set.

China Product Counterfeiting: Using UDRP To Shut Down The Website

Our law firm has in the last year had probably twice as many counterfeit matters as in any prior year. Yesterday, 12 August, 2014, the internet hit an arbitrary limit of more than 512,000 routes. This 512K route limit is something we have known about for some time.

Is the Internet full? Major sites brought down by technical problems

Problems that brought down websites such as eBay could become a regular occurrence as the Internet effectively runs out of space, experts have warned.

< <http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/internet/11032430/Is-the-Internet-full-Major-sites-brought-down-by-technical-problems.html> http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/internet/11032430/Is-the-Internet-full-Major-sites-brought-down-by-technical-problems.html>

Here?s why your Internet might have been slow on Tuesday

Some users were frustrated to find some of their favorite Web sites were unresponsive or otherwise inaccessible Tuesday. But it wasn't a data center outage or a squirrel chewing through a cable line causing the disruption. Instead, structural problems with one of the core technologies that keeps the Internet working were to blame, researchers say.

< <http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2014/08/13/heres-why-your-internet-might-have-been-slow-on-tuesday/> http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2014/08/13/heres-why-your-internet-might-have-been-slow-on-tuesday/>

Internet routers hitting 512K limit, some become unreliable

>From performance issues at hosting provider Liquid Web to outages at eBay and LastPass, large networks and websites suffered a series of disruptions and outages on Tuesday. Some Internet engineers are blaming the disruptions on a novel technical issue that impacts older Internet routers.

Echoes of Y2K: Engineers Buzz That Internet Is Outgrowing Its Gear

Network engineers are buzzing this week as the Internet outgrows some of its gear. Internet providers, corporations and universities all rely on a common map of routes to send emails, videos and everything else on the Web where it's supposed to go.

BGP Routing Table Size Limit Blamed for Tuesday?s Website Outages

Many websites, including Data Center Knowledge and the WHIR, responded sporadically from certain locations Tuesday, but the outages did not result from loss of power at a hosting company?s or a cloud provider?s data center, a flood or a network cable severed by a squirrel. The problem was attributed to a structural problem in the way the Internet is built.

Internet troubles today? You can blame it on IPv4

You might have heard something about Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) causing possible connectivity problems in future if web users don?t begin using the newer IPv6. Well, those problems have arrived, with numerous websites including eBay, Amazon, LinkedIn and others hit by outages yesterday. Also affected were major network providers like AT&T, Comcast, Time Warner and Verizon, as well as BT and Virgin in the UK.

Global internet outages caused by routing table spike

Internet connectivity issues this week which saw many sites become unreachable were caused by a sudden spike in announcements of traffic routes between networks, which in turn pushed core routers over their default limits.

Website Usage Analysis in the New gTLDs

A recent study, by EURid and the Leuven Statistics Research Centre, set out to better understand the most common usage of websites that are linked to domains, and we thought it would be an interesting exercise to extend similar analysis to the new gTLD market. So, we analyzed all second-level domains registered in new gTLDs according to published zone files on June 29, 2014. Verisign utilizes our own proprietary process for classifying websites, which results in similar classifications to those by EURid. The primary difference is that the Verisign classification method is machine-based and is evaluated for each domain independently, while the EURid approach leveraged samples that humans classified.

Google Domains: Give Me More by Jean Guillon

The Buzz seems to be about Google Domains at the moment: Google is launching as a Registrar and will soon offer plenty of fantastic things to do with domain names. But... is there anything new with Google Domains? I checked the features but... I found nothing that other Registrars do not already offer and I admit I expected to be a little more impressed.

au: Metadata debate: the need for warrants should be our guiding principle by Bret Walker

There is more to the metadata retention controversy than the attorney general?s grasp of his brief. He and the more tech-savvy Malcolm Turnbull had form in opposition. Then, they claimed to regard Labor proposals to much the same effect as unjustified incursions on privacy ? but the terrorist threats to Australia have not shifted enough, quantitatively let alone qualitatively, to explain their apparent shift of perception. Perhaps the fact that they were then in opposition and are now in government explains their shift.
