Abstract: Can ccTLDs be considered property? Or are they sovereign rights? Or are they somehow both? What?s in a domain? Tapping an unlikely resource in Mali

MALI has long had links with the wider world. Tripoli and Gao were once connected by chariot. Trade routes shuttled scholars and goods from Timbuktu to the Mediterranean and beyond. The same routes ferry guns, drugs, people and pasta today. Now Mali?s government is finding new links on the web. Disappointed that its national TLD, ?.ml?, the national equivalent of ?.com? or ?.co.uk?, had just a few hundred users in 2012, Mali?s webmasters asked for help from Freenom, a Dutch internet firm.

Estimating Trademark Claims Notice Suppression of Non-Infringing New gTLD Registrations by Philip Corwin

On February 2nd ICANN staff announced the release of a Draft Report: Rights Protection Mechanisms Review that is open for public comment until May 1st. This Draft Report is preliminary to an Issues Report requested by the GNSO Council that is due to be delivered by September 30th, and that may set the stage for a Policy Development Process (PDP) on Rights Protection Mechanisms (RPMs) that could commence in 2016. Such a PDP could consider comprehensive reform of these RPMs as well as of the UDRP.

The .DOCTOR Quarantine by Jon Nevett

ICANN should reconsider its decision to quarantine .DOCTOR, given that it's not even sick. In an utterly surprising move, ICANN staff and the Board's New gTLD Program Committee ("NGPC") recently informed the applicants for .DOCTOR that it has singled out the gTLD as a test case for controlling content and limiting speech on the Internet. In the epitome of top-down policy making, ICANN issued an edict that it will implement nearly year-old advice from the Government Advisory Committee ("GAC") differently from all other similarly situated gTLDs and in contravention of subsequent GAC advice.

The quandary for brand owners as ?.sucks? unveils $2,499 registration fee 13 Mar 15

It has been announced that sunrise registrations (and most brand-related registrations outside sunrise) in the ?.sucks? string will cost $2,499, making defensive registrations a costly proposition and one many brands will struggle to justify. John Berard, CEO of Vox Populi Registry, has unapologetically told WTR that the pricing is ?responsive to the opportunity?.

< <http://www.worldtrademarkreview.com/blog/Detail.aspx?g=76af1aa2-c1ba-4cf9-a3e3-31bc2c3dd356> http://www.worldtrademarkreview.com/blog/Detail.aspx?g=76af1aa2-c1ba-4cf9-a3e3-31bc2c3dd356>

We Know This .Sucks

When we originally heard about Vox Populi?s plans to offer .SUCKS sunrise registrations for $25,000, we were outraged. We understand better than anyone that registries can charge whatever they want, and that registrars must mark up those fees to recover their costs for integration, registration, and ongoing management. All that said, their original pricing seemed extortionate to brand owners.

Cybercriminals Are Misappropriating Businesses? Web Addresses

Cybercriminals targeting businesses are stealing more than customer passwords and credit-card numbers these days. Some are misappropriating the very Web addresses?or domain names?of the businesses themselves.

Walmart Not Horsing Around With Parody Domain Site

Walmart. Just saying the company's name is usually enough to evoke unbidden brain-sounds of terrifying organ music and images of pitchfork-wielding devil-imps. But, hey, it's a large business that's been around for quite a while, so I guess it's doing alright. It seems to me that somebody might want to call a meeting with the Walmart legal brain trust, because the company's campaign against a silly and simple parody website isn't achieving much of anything at all, and is in fact Streisanding the parody site into national views.

UDRP Spotlight: Getting It Right the First Time

There are lots of crazy UDRP stories out there (domain owners listed as ?Mickey Mouse? or ?Haclav Vavel?) but, admit it, who doesn?t love a juicy decision on procedural grounds? This week?s case provides us with an opportunity to consider the application of res judicata (and poor lawyering) in the domain sphere.

IPv6 Security Myth #9: There Aren't Any IPv6 Security Resources by Chris Grundemann

We are approaching the end of this 10 part series on the most common IPv6 security myths. Now it's time to turn our eyes away from security risks to focus a bit more on security resources. Today's myth is actually one of the most harmful to those who hold it. If you believe that there is no good information out there, it's nearly impossible to find that information. So let's get down to it and dispel our 9th myth.

Do you carefully consider your domain extension?

To be present online, is to make choices. Do you build your own website? What will the design look like? Which (website) content do you provide? When you pick a domain name, you?ll think the name through. But does that thinking also apply for the domain extension? The recent internet (r)evolution enables us to choose out of more than 1.300 domain extensions. As a result, not only your domain name but also the extension matters. It tells something relevant about you, your company, product or service.
