Access for all: MEPs back annual check-up for the internet

Even the internet can do with a regular check-up. Every year stakeholders come together to discuss issues such as technology standards and the smooth running of the internet at the annual meeting of the IGF. Why Is ICANN Hiding The Solution To Its Accountability Problem?

What the Articles of Incorporation give with one hand, however, ICANN?s bylaws take away with the other. The bylaws eliminate the possibility of having members in Article XVII, which specifies the corporation shall not have members as defined by California?s Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation law. That can and should be changed, especially as a precursor to any action by the Obama administration to transition full responsibility for Internet oversight to ICANN. A strong system of accountability is the only way to insure that the process of Internet governance won?t captured by rogue countries or other special interests when and if the domain name system function is transferred.

A new decree that went into effect today allows the French government to block websites accused of promoting terrorism and publishing child pornography, without seeking a court order. Under the new rules, published last week by France's Ministry of the Interior, ISPs must take down offending websites within 24 hours of receiving a government order. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve says the decree is critical to combatting terrorism, but civil rights groups say it gives the government dangerously broad powers to suppress free speech. ...
