Brazil's Rousseff praises U.S. for relaxing grip on Internet

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff praised the United States on Wednesday for its decision to ease control over the Internet and called for a more democratic, transparent network following the U.S. National Security Agency spying scandal.

< <http://in.reuters.com/article/2014/04/23/brazil-internet-idINL2N0NF1HK20140423> http://in.reuters.com/article/2014/04/23/brazil-internet-idINL2N0NF1HK20140423>

Brazil's Global Internet Conference Includes Call to End Spying [IDG]

Participants in a Brazil-hosted conference on Internet governance laid out an aggressive agenda, with some calling for a policy statement that would condemn Internet surveillance, support net neutrality regulations and create programs to close the digital divide.

Brazil lays down the law with Internet 'Bill of Rights'

Edward Snowden probably didn't realize that his leaks on the US National Security Agency would lead to a Brazilian Internet "Bill of Rights." But, revelations of online snooping and invasions of privacy have spurred the South American country to lay down the law.

At Net Conference, Calls for More Focus on Surveillance

The Internet governance conference Net Mundial was inspired by revelations of spying by the U.S. National Security Agency. But some participants in Sao Paulo this week say they are disappointed that surveillance isn?t a bigger part of the agenda.

Brazil leader wants Internet to be run 'by all' [AFP]

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff took aim at US dominance of the Internet Wednesday, appealing for a new system that would make running of the online world "open to all."

India to stall Internet reform proposal at Brazil meet

With a view to assert the ?sovereign right? of governments to ?regulate and manage? the internet, India will oppose the proposal to ?reform? ICANN ? the principal body that manages the web?s domain name system ? at the ongoing Global Multistakeholder Meeting on the Future of Internet Governance (NETmundial) in Brazil.

Spotlight on African Contributions to Internet Governance Discussions (Part 1: NETmundial) by Ephraim Percy Kenyanito

The internet affects every individual in this world whether directly or indirectly. For example, a medical professional somewhere in Goma, Congo might access the internet to read and post reviews to current medication available and this might have an impact on the kind of medication that he/she recommends to the patient, whether the patient has access to affordable internet or not. Since the internet affects everyone, Africans citizens who are aware of internet governance discussions, expect African stakeholders to engage in these discussions.

< <http://www.circleid.com/posts/20140423_african_contributions_to_internet_governance_discussions_part_1/> http://www.circleid.com/posts/20140423_african_contributions_to_internet_governance_discussions_part_1/>

Future of the internet debated at NetMundial in Brazil

A meeting to determine how the internet should be governed gets underway in Sao Paulo, Brazil later. The country's president, Dilma Rousseff, organised the two-day NetMundial event following allegations the US National Security Agency (NSA) had monitored her phone and emails.

< <http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-27108869> http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-27108869>

Brazil conference will plot Internet's future post NSA spying

A global conference in Brazil on the future of the Internet in the wake of U.S. spying revelations might be much less anti-American than first thought after Washington said it was willing to loosen its control over the Web.

< <http://in.reuters.com/article/2014/04/22/internet-conference-idINL2N0ND1DU20140422> http://in.reuters.com/article/2014/04/22/internet-conference-idINL2N0ND1DU20140422>

Keys to the Internet up for grabs at global summit

The US is giving up its control over the Internet to mend international relationships. Now, countries will meet to decide how Internet policy will be handled in the coming years.

For More Internet, and More Democracy, Forget NetMundial and ICANN

As the Netmundial conference on the future of Internet governance starts, rather than asking "What can we expect from it?", perhaps we might ask instead whether this future might be more promisingly reformed by political, technical and architectural innovations than by a preach to a so-called multistakeholder choir convened in Sao Paulo.

Everybody who?s anybody in the world of Internet governance is in Brazil this week for NetMundial, a two-day meeting in S?o Paulo essentially about stripping the U.S. of some of its control over the Internet.

Brazil?s Internet Summit: Building Bridges to Avoid ?Splinternet?

Netizens of the world are in Sao Paulo this week for the Global Multistakeholder Meeting on the Future of Internet Governance (April 23-24). The Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br), which organized the gathering in partnership with ICANN, have high hopes for ?NETmundial,? where they hope universal principles for Internet governance will be negotiated. The good news for the United States is that participants seem committed to establishing consensus-based public policies to safeguard the web?s open architecture?as well as to rebooting rather than replacing a multistakeholder governance model that gives equal weight to governments, the private sector, and civil society.

Obama Wants a Global Community to Run the Internet, but It Could End Up in the Hands of China. Or Putin

Turns out, the Internet doesn't run itself. Until mid-March, a branch of the U.S. government was responsible for such duties as assigning and managing domain names. Suffixes like ".com" or ".org," which outside of the U.S. also end in country identifiers like ".de" for Germany, are all organized by ICANN, which is a contractor of an arm of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

F1 trademark row to resurface?

As Bernie Ecclestone's bribery trial gets underway in Munich a previous legal issue which proved unsuccessful and highly costly for him rears its ugly head. ... At the end of the 1990s and early 2000s, Ecclestone was involved in a brutal, hard fought battle for the domain name F1.com. Businesswoman and F1 fan Nicky Morris bought the domain name and established one of the first dedicated websites and soon fans found a whole new way to connect to their sport. Though he had barely heard of the 'interweb thingy' and had no product of his own to offer, Ecclestone fought Morris on both side of the Atlantic in his efforts to take back the domain name and along the way things got very messy.

ARIN runs out of IPv4 addresses

After IANA allocated the final IPv4 addresses to the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) on February 3, 2011, the RIRs have been running out of IPv4 addresses over the past three years. APNIC ran out on April 15, 2011; RIPE NCC ran out on September 14, 2012; and now ARIN has run out on April 23, 2014. LACNIC will run out sometime this year, and AFRINIC may not run out for a couple of years. Now, organizations in Canada, the U.S., and some nearby islands will not be able to receive any more IPv4 address allocations. Don?t be too alarmed, you have options.
