I think there is value in maintaining this list, presuming it's not taking money out of Kim's pocket (I'm sure we could crowd-fund the hosting costs if we had to - I'd certainly be happy to chip in). At present, it's only really used by David Goldstein with his DNS news updates and people like me that like to vent about domain name issues from time to time. But, as Sean notes, if/when a controversial issue kicks off (second-level registrations, anyone?), I'm sure it will quickly become very active again, and I think having a forum that is independent of auDA is potentially quite valuable. I realise there are other lists and forums that arguably cover .au issues, but I suspect none of them are as comprehensive as this one (the fact that this list has been very quiet for some time, I presume means most people haven't unsubscribed). With regard to David's excellent DNS news updates, I've always felt that these should be an auDA member benefit, so I think should be sent out using the auDA members mailing list. Doing that might encourage a few new members, and I think these updates are worth well more than the $22 annual membership fee anyway... Anyway, here's something I was about to post to the list: NZ: Final policies approved for .nz registrations at the second level http://dnc.org.nz/final-policies-nz-registrations-second-level?m=309 They're also discussing changing their flag. Meanwhile, we're reintroducing knighthoods... cheers jon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sean Finn" <sean at wikwok.com> To: ".au DNS Discussion List" <dns at dotau.org> Sent: Wednesday, 26 March, 2014 10:19:54 PM Subject: Re: [DNS] Should this list continue to exist? Then who would watch the watchers? We're silent now because, I'd assume, there's not too much beef with the job AuDA is performing. If this were ever to change, would AuDA tollerate criticism? -Sean. Nominet then 'improved' things by closing it and moving to a vbulletin system inside their online services, and the reach & debate appears to be all but nullified. The discussion involved key members of the nascent Internet community in Australia, and was the hub of activity that lead to the creation of auDA to manage the the .AU space. Today the list if effectively dormant. auDA does not use it to disseminate or discuss issues relating to .AU, and there are little in the way of community discussion here on .AU. For example, auDA saw fit to report to the AusNOG mailing list about DNSSEC initiatives in .AU, but not here ( http://lists.ausnog.net/ pipermail/ausnog/2014-March/ 023181.html ) I'd like to pose the question whether this forum should be retired. There is certainly no problem sustaining its existence if it continues to fulfil a purpose. However, it may be its time has come after 20 years and is no longer a needed part of the community. I'd appreciate members' thoughts. kim ------------------------------ ------------------------------ --------------- List policy, unsubscribing and archives => http://dotau.org/ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ --------------- List policy, unsubscribing and archives => http://dotau.org/ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ --------------- List policy, unsubscribing and archives => http://dotau.org/ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ --------------- List policy, unsubscribing and archives => http://dotau.org/ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ --------------- List policy, unsubscribing and archives => http://dotau.org/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- List policy, unsubscribing and archives => http://dotau.org/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
