Response to NTIA by Pat Kane
FYI?We just sent a response back to the NTIA. We first reached out to them on May 30 regarding Verisign?s concerns around the advisability of rapid delegation of new gTLDS to the root zone. We received NTIA?s response on August 2 asking for Verisign to provide NTIA with ?written confirmation no later than August 16 that Verisign will process change requests for the new gTLD program when authorized to delegate a new gTLD.?

Part 5 of 5; New gTLD SSR-2: Exploratory Consumer Impact Analysis
Throughout this series of blog posts we?ve discussed a number of issues related to security, stability, and resilience of the DNS ecosystem, particularly as we approach the rollout of new gTLDs. Additionally, we highlighted a number of issues that we believe are outstanding and need to be resolved before the safe introduction of new gTLDs can occur ? and we tried to provide some context as to why, all the while continuously highlighting that nearly all of these unresolved recommendations came from parties in addition to Verisign over the last several years.

gTLD Security Study Released ? Delays Up Ahead
The results of a new study on the security risks of proposed gTLD names likely will lead to delays of many new gTLD applications by at least four months. The majority of new gTLDs are "low risk" and got the green light to proceed, although these "low risk" applicants must still wait 120 days after signing their contracts before they can activate any domain names in their gTLDs. Higher risk applications could be delayed longer.

.poker domains: Why They Matter
The .com address?a few years ago this was the only domain that anyone really wanted. While there were options available such as the .net or .org address, they were generally seen as second-rate, when compared to the .com. Today, the internet is a much bigger place that it ever was before, plus using a domain name has become even more important for a company that wants to prove itself seriously.

L?Internet: The State of Cyber in the Land of Wine and Cheese (?and Monet, Chanel, Matisse, Edith Piaf, Moulin Rouge, Marie Antoinette, Rousseau?)
What did I learn on my first and recent trip to France? Well, for starters, I confirmed that the wine and cheese in France really is the best (sorry, rest of the world). Yet, oddly enough, not one of the three companies that applied to run the new gTLD .WINE is based in France ? and not a single company applied for .CHEESE, perhaps because only a portion of the world?s population possesses the genetic ability to digest dairy (limiting, to some degree, international market growth). Upon connecting to my hotel?s wi-fi, I also noticed that my Apple device immediately began running Google.fr and that many, though not all, of the businesses in France run advertisements for websites using the .FR ccTLD.

Recording your brands in the Trademark Clearinghouse for the new gTLD launch ? timing may be everything
It is anticipated that the first new gTLDs may be delegated as early as September. While there has been slippage of the launch date in the past, it surely will happen soon. The first new gTLDs to be delegated will be the 100 or so ?internationalized? gTLDs (those in non-Latin scripts such as Chinese, Arabic, or Cyrillic). Once the process gets rolling, ICANN believes it can delegate as many as 20 new gTLDs per week. There are approximately 1,300 possible new gTLDs that may soon coexist with the familiar .com, .net, and .org.

Protect Your Brands In The New Domain Name Regime: The Trademark Clearinghouse Is Open For Business
New gTLDs such as .fun, .law, and .money have been in the works for a very long time, and the first batch may be just around the corner. ICANN recently published a "hypothetical" timeline that pins the first TLD delegation date (the date the gTLD becomes active) as September 5, 2013.

Dish DBS ruled a top level domain cybersquatter
It?s notable that the two applicants deemed to be attempting to cybersquat TLDs thus far aren?t nefarious cybersquatters, as industry groups suggested would happen. Instead, it?s two members of those types of trade groups that have lost the two Legal Rights Objections for new TLDs.

How applicants selected their new top level domains
Some new TLD applicants picked one or two domains to apply for. Others applied for dozens. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall when these companies debated about which ones to apply for. From talking to many applicants, I?ve discovered a number of approaches they took to creating and finalizing their list.

Abstract: On February 12, 2013, the President issued Executive Order 13636, stating that the ?cyber threat to critical infrastructure continues to grow and represents one of the most serious national security challenges we must confront.? The Executive Order sets out a number of steps to address this problem, including calling on the Department of Commerce?s National Institute of Standards and Technology (?NIST?) to develop a Cybersecurity Framework (?Framework?) and the Department of Homeland Security (?DHS?) to build a voluntary program (?Program?) ?to support the adoption of the Cybersecurity Framework by owners and operators of critical infrastructure and any other interested entities.

Ghosts of Past Complaints
Microsoft Corporation recently experienced success after filing a UDRP complaint with the National Arbitration Forum disputing 13 domain names containing a number of its trademarks. The respondent, simply listed as ?Admin? from the Republic of Korea, failed to submit a response, but this was not why the NAF Panel ruled in favor of Microsoft. Even with no reply from a respondent, a complainant must still prove the three elements of the UDRP:
