Internet rights are human rights, claims APC before the Human Rights Council by Association for Progressive Communications
This statement was submitted to the Human Rights Council in preparation for its seventeenth regular session: APC welcomes the annual report of the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Opinion and its focus on the internet. Access to the internet facilitates freedom of expression and freedom of association, enables knowledge sharing, learning and collaboration, and is a driver for social and economic development. Yet, as the report details, access to the internet is increasingly at risk. Recent internet shutdowns have limited freedom of expression, freedom of association and political free speech.

The User Experience with New TLDs: How to Avoid the Junk Mail File or 'User Unknown' by Alexa Raad
As new TLDs are launched, the industry mustn't overlook the customer experience. A key question is this: Will the software applications we all use, recognize the new TLDs and know what to do with them in a timely fashion? Think email and even form-fill applications. I speak from experience here. In 2006 when we launched the .MOBI TLD, there were arguably only a handful of .MOBI email addresses in existence. To my dismay, I found that often emails sent only from my .MOBI account were not being received at the other end.

No IPocalypse, but the IPv6 Transition Still Presents Risks by Ram Mohan
In February 2011, the clock finally ran out on IPv4, the trusty Internet Protocol that has been used to connect networked computers for the last 30 years. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), which manages the master pool of IP addresses, assigned its last five blocks of IPv4 space to the world's five Regional Internet Registries. From that moment, another clock started ticking the countdown to the moment.

Hey Elliot Here Is Why We Should Be Critical of Parking Companies
Yesterday Elliotsblog.com had a post entitled ?not overly critical of parking companies?. In his post Elliot says in part: ?Yes, there is a BIG issue of them working within a ?black box,? not sharing how they calculate revenue share and other information with domain owners. Most are anything but transparent when it comes to their operations, and they likely take a very large cut of revenue from our domain assets.?

Opinion: When the Internet Thinks It Knows You by Eli Pariser, president of the board of MoveOn.org and author of ?The Filter Bubble: What the Internet Is Hiding From You?
Once upon a time, the story goes, we lived in a broadcast society. In that dusty pre-Internet age, the tools for sharing information weren?t widely available. If you wanted to share your thoughts with the masses, you had to own a printing press or a chunk of the airwaves, or have access to someone who did. Controlling the flow of information was an elite class of editors, producers and media moguls who decided what people would see and hear about the world. They were the Gatekeepers.

Comment: A blueprint for a modern intellectual property policy
There is a world of people who, for varying reasons, obsess about intellectual property. Last Wednesday morning we were all holding our breath. The previous six months had seen an intense debate about IP in the digital age. Is it too restrictive, for example in allowing economic rights to prevent useful activities such as medical research, which relies on searching through data and text? Do we need to do more to make sure people can't just take work without creators being adequately compensated? Is policy adapting to the digital age?

Commission sets out "blueprint" for Intellectual Property Rights to boost creativity and innovation
Intellectual property rights (IPR), which comprise patents, trademarks, designs and geographical indications, as well as copyright (authors' rights) and rights related to copyright (for performers, producers and broadcasters), have been around for centuries. Often, without our even realising, they affect our daily lives: they protect the technology we use (cars, mobile phones, trains), the food we eat and the music we listen to or the films we watch. But in the last few years, technological change and, in particular, the growing importance of online activities, have completely changed the world in which IPR operate.
