W3C - Guardian Leader It is difficult to believe that the world wide web could get much better. Since it entered the public arena barely a decade ago, it has transformed how we search for information, do business and entertain ourselves. It has spawned eBay, Amazon and Google and, through search engines, has enabled anyone to get knowledge about anything if they are online. http://www.guardian.co.uk/leaders/story/0,,1780080,00.html The UN Human Rights Council and the Right to Development by Alan Brouder Advocates of the right to development may have some cause for optimism following the election of 47 states to the new UN Human Rights Council on 9 May 2006. Despite the election of China, Cuba, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and other states with poor human rights records, cautious optimism is warranted for three reasons. First, the new body replaces the much criticized Commission on Human Rights and will occupy a more prominent place in the UN's hierarchy as a full subsidiary organ of the General Assembly. The Council will have a much broader mandate and wider powers than the Commission, and will have the potential to be more transparent and less susceptible to political manipulation. Second, the resolution establishing the Council explicitly refers to the right to development both in its preamble and in paragraph 4. http://www2.jura.uni-halle.de/telc/PolicyPaper22.pdf IGF, $$$, .XXX and .MOBI Bret Fausett on the the IGF meeting in Geneva. http://blog.lextext.com/blog/_archives/2006/5/23/1978814.html Web inventor warns of 'dark' net The inventor of the web, Tim Berners-Lee, has warned of the dangers of introducing a two-tier internet. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/5009250.stm http://www.out-law.com/page-6946 Next, a 'more revolutionary' Web Just when the ideas behind "Web 2.0" are starting to enter into the mainstream, the mass of brains behind the World Wide Web has started to introduce pieces of what may end up being called Web 3.0. http://iht.com/articles/2006/05/23/business/web.php Berners-Lee calls for Net neutrality Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the Web, has called for clear separation between Internet access and Internet content. [PDF]. The paper presents results from a large scale survey of DNS, illustrating how complex and subtle dependencies between names and nameservers lead to a highly insecure naming system. It is well-known that nameservers in the Domain Name System are vulnerable to a wide range of attacks. We recently performed a large scale survey to answer some basic questions about the legacy DNS: Which domain names are the most vulnerable?; Which servers control the largest portion of the namespace and are thus likely to be attacked?; Are there any servers with known security holes, and which domain names do they affect? We present the results from this survey below in the hope of identifying problem spots in the Internet and thus improving the security of our common cyberinfrastructure. This study is based entirely on public data - all information available on these pages is also available to others with less-than-honorable intentions. http://www.circleid.com/posts/survey_of_dns_security/ DNSSEC Deployment at the Root The DNSSEC is a security protocol for providing cryptographic assurance (i.e. using the public key cryptography digital signature technology) to the data retrieved from the DNS distributed database (RFC4033). DNSSEC deployment at the root is said to be subject to politics, but there is seldom detailed discussion about this "DNS root signing" politics. Actually, DNSSEC deployment requires more than signing the DNS root zone data; it also involves secure delegations from the root to the TLDs, and DNSSEC deployment by TLD administrations (I omit other participants involvement as my focus is policy around the DNS root). There is a dose of naivety in the idea of detailing the political aspects of the DNS root, but I volunteer! My perspective is an interested observer. http://www.circleid.com/posts/dnssec_deployment_at_root/ Online 'squatters' might yield big revenue Interested in comparing video cameras, taking a vacation in Las Vegas or buying some lawn furniture?
