ICANN and Legalities
Bret Fausett points to two lawsuits against VeriSign
and ICANN for violating U.S. anti-trust laws. They
state the obvious: VeriSign and ICANN made an
agreement that is to the large financial benefit of
the two corporations and the financial detriment of
nearly everyone else.

ICANN May Release Single-Letter Domain Names
"If it's a single letter domain name, how much roadway
does it have?" Leslie Ament, director, customer
intelligence research, Aberdeen, told TechNewsWorld.
"How much brand equity is in a single letter vs. a
domain? Why would IBM, for instance, want to be I?
It's not closely enough related to the brand name to
be worth it."

Single-letter Internet names are valuable
Although Internet domain names may be getting longer
as Web sites squeeze more into the crowded ''.com''
address space, most single-letter names like ''a.com''
and ''b.com'' remain unused.

Domain Names for the Asian Markets
An Asian presence is the norm for international
businesses. For this, domain names are surely powerful
and effective business identifiers for the Asian
markets. With the Internet as a global medium for
local users, the commercial values of domain names are
a potential that must not be overlooked. Indeed,
since the launch of UDRP(1) by ICANN(2), the use of
the Internet has kept improving and growing to suit
demands and needs of businesses worldwide, with a much
wider and more diversified spectrum of users.
Through reviewing and comparing recent case examples,
this article examines, from an Asian perspective, the
salient features of the rationale and operation of the
UDRP process in the evolving Internet. Additionally,
it also highlights the list of factors that those
involved in domain name disputes under the UDRP should
be alerted to in dealing with such disputes.

Correction: .com prices could rise 50%
On two recent occasions we have reported that the
proposed new .com registry contract between VeriSign
Inc and ICANN would allow the price of a .com domain
to double between 2007 and 2012. The largest potential
increase would in fact be 50%, from $6 to $9, as we
originally reported.

WSIS & GOVERNANCE

WSIS Proves a Summit of Unsolved Solutions
The article concludes: "It was clear from the Tunis
Summit that the frustration expressed by governments
around the world that was not addressed, will continue
to impact Internet governance developments in various
ways. On the way home from Tunis, I met a South
African journalist who described the frustration he
and others felt with the Summit actions on ICANN. The
so called Summit of Solutions, as the Tunis Summit was
called by officials, was not for him an appropriate
title as the problems, he explained, had basically
been left unsolved."
