sg: Chinese .sg domain names on trial
SINGAPORE Network Information Centre (SGNIC), a
subsidiary of the Infocomm Development Authority of
Singapore (IDA), is now offering, as a part of a
six-month trial, Chinese or Tamil '.sg' domain names
for individuals as well as organisations. These domain
names will actually be in Chinese or Tamil characters.

ICANN's man in Europe bows out
Internet overseeing organisation ICANN still has
problems but it will come out of the UN's upcoming
review into Internet governance with flying colours,

The US Department of Commerce, the DNS Root, and ICANN
The recent announcement in eWeek titled "Feds Won't
Let Go of Internet DNS" (slashdotted here) has some
major internet policy implications. The short, careful
wording appears to be more of a threat to ICANN than a
power grab. In short, the US Department of Commerce's
National Telecommunications and Information
Administration announced that it was not going to stop
overseeing ICANN's changes to the DNS root.

XXX: A New Frontier for Cybersquatting?
"Let the unseemly cybersquatting begin," said Karen
Whitehouse, an Internet Corporation for Assigned Names

US Government to continue DNS maintenance
Going against previously stated policy, the United
States Department of Commerce has decided not to hand
over control of DNS (Domain Name System) services to
the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers (ICANN) as it had previously planned to do in
September of next year.

DNS name serving through NSD
Given the sheer importance of name servers in
providing Domain Name System (DNS) resolution -- a
process used by every Web-facing application to
translate domain names into IP addresses and vice
versa -- not many people put much thought into the

The Dupe Domain Indexing Dilemma
Keyword Champion Dan Thies deserves all the credit for
this one: the Dupe Domain Indexing Dilemma. Dan
freaked me out the other day when he told me one of my
domains had a "dupe content problem" in Google. "Wha
wha WHAAAAAAT?", I shrieked. Dan then calmly pointed
me to his blog post above and explained that both the
www version of my site and the version without the www
were being indexed by Google, potentially attracting a
duplicate content penalty and certainly diluting my
hard-earned link popularity. Turned out I was
competing with my own site for rankings!

New Report on IPv6 Addressing Released
IGP releases a new paper discussing proposals for
competing sources of IPv6 addresses. IP addressing is
one of the most important - yet least understood -
aspects of Internet governance. The new IGP paper
reviews the debate on IP addressing and concludes that
"there is room for significant policy variation in
address space management. Introduction of a
responsible, globalized competing IPv6 allocation
authority below the top level would permit
experimentation with different policies and governance
systems. This might make addressing more responsive to
the needs of users."
