Clues may point to Google browser
The Google franchise could be coming to a Web browser
near you--if all the recent clues add up, that is.
Evidence is growing that may support rumors that the
preeminent search company plans to introduce a
Google-branded Web browser down the road. Among the
clues are a domain-name registration, a patent
application and several recent hires.

Domain Name Infringement?
Where does blatant mimicry stop and similarity start?
It is very fair for Henry Ford to get upset if some
nerd tries to register another car called FORD or
AFFORD or even FOARD. He might get not quite so upset
if they call it PORD or DORD but he has absolutely no
reason or legal right at all if a budding car designer
is set on calling his new car, with Spanish flavour,
an ESPORD. It might imply similarity but no expert or
even amateur car buyer is going to confuse it with
dear old Henry's mass produced range.

MARID is Dead
As long suspected by some, the IETF is going to be
closing up the Mail Transfer Agent Authentication in
DNS (MARID) Working Group according to today's post by
Ted Hardie, co-AD for Applications. Larry Seltzer of
eWeek was right on target about this: "The rest of the
SID standards process will now be a waste of time
thanks to Microsoft, and the other participants will
afterwards pick up the pieces and get the job done
with another spec."

Sales Penthouse
After last week's blockbuster market performance
(which included a trio of six-figure sales), a step
back was almost inevitable this week. Still, with
seven five-figure transactions reported, the new sales
crop would stack up well by any standard measure.
Afternic.com ascended to the summit of our new Top Ten
chart after one of their clients ran up a $25,500 tab
for UniqueHotels.com.

DomainNesteggs.com Offers Tomorrow’s Robotic Domain
Names Today (news release)
If you go to your Internet connection today and type
in www.Robot-Rentals.com, you won’t be directed to a
thriving Internet company that rents out personal
robots by the month. At the present, such a business
doesn’t even exist. But that fact didn’t stop a
farsighted Nashville futurist from registering 200
robot-related Internet domains earlier this year, and
then listing them for sale at www.DomainNesteggs.com.

WSIS
*****
Internet Governance Has Become a Non-Issue
It's funny, but I recall the battle cry that the WWW
was "free" back in its early days. When contributing
game concept to the early and great gaming pioneers
like Infocom, there was such a great esprit-du-corps
amongst our team regarding the fun as well as utility
that the WWW offerred. In retrospect, we were so
naive. I recall the days when guys like Bill Gates
prided themselves on being such a great "hackers" - it
was a noble term back then.

UN ICT Task Force Series 5 - Internet Governance: A
Grand Collaboration
Realizing the World Summit on the Information Society
(WSIS) vision of constructing Internet governance
arrangements that are multilateral, transparent and
democratic with the full involvement of all
stakeholders is a noble challenge. Meeting it will
require goodwill among all parties, as well as good
information on which to base decisions. The papers
contributed to the United Nations Information and
Communication Technologies Task Force (ICT TF) Global
Forum on Internet Governance contain a lot of useful
information on how many different organizations are
already governing the Internet and its effects on
society. At the same time the papers suggest that a
number of important issues are not being addressed
effectively, and that in some areas there is an urgent
need to put in place new arrangements to counter real
and present threats to the stability and utility of
the Internet. These contributions helped participants
in the Forum begin the process of building a global
consensus on Internet governance – a process that
hopefully will continue beyond the second phase of the
WSIS. As a result of these contributions, the vision
of a “grand collaboration” on Internet governance is a
step closer to reality.
