I can echo Bennett's comments. There are multiple dodgy applications coming through. In some cases you can deduce that they are bouncing between registrars to see if anyone will register the name. The other challenge is that with the free email forwarding, the cost of setup and hosting of their free email may outweigh the benefit of the actual conversion of paying registrants in 6 months times. The main reason to continue with the promotion is simply to get more people using the .au namespace and have .id.au as an accepted 2ld through general email use and exposure. The ultimate aim is to increase value of .au in the minds of businesses and the general community. The less emails that come from hotmail, yahoo and ISP addresses, the greater the power of .au and the greater ownership the community has of it. The trial will end at some point as it is not necessarily sustainable in the short term, however it has long term benefits the .au space. Enetica stopped participating about 1 month ago for the exact reasons you listed. Towards the end about the only applications we had were from obviously dodgy people trying to register suspect looking domains, often from overseas, or from people applying for 20 or 30 domains each. Our resellers still get discounted id.au domains, but no more free retail ones. Bennett.
