Matthew, This most defiantly is possible, if the transfer was confirmed the domain will be transfered even if it was just renewed. The expire date will have been reset to the transfer date if you check it with Enetica. So basically the registry just got 2 x $11 fees to renew one domain name. A renew function from Melbourne IT and a transfer from Enetica. The way in which domain names are only registered for 2 year in the .au space this is going to happen more and more. Registrants are going to have to be a lot more careful and make final decisions when they choose a registrar to renew with.
