The Melbourne IT process is to check the record at AusRegistry before sending out a renewal notice. The renewal notice should state the date on which the record was checked. e.g as of <date>, Melbourne IT is your registrar-of-record and your domain name is due to expire on <expiry date>. It is possible for a name to be transferred away from Melbourne IT after the record was checked at the registry. As others have noted, you can check the current registrar of record via http://whois.ausregistry.com.au I will look into how this mistake was made.
