> (you may very well already be paying a subsidy : Exactly. Those of us with domain names in com.au, for example, are subsiding those with domain names in org.au. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to each domain name holder to decide. For me, I'm happy to consider the thought of subsidies to others, if and only if, those subsidies are clearly identified, and clearly targeted. I'm not happy having my SME subsidise other organisations (or indeed individuals) which have far more resources than mine. Which is what happens today. > we must also acknowledge that this isn't a 'new' > proposal - it's a proposal to maintain the status-quo > - nothing more > The best option may be for applicants to provide a > Registered Charities Number, or some other verifiable > document certifying NFP status You have completely avoided addressing the issue that many organisations with NFP status have huge resources, and its difficult to see why struggling small SME's should subsidise these. Just being NFP is not enough. If you follow your 'Registered Charities' line of thought, then: a) It contradicts your earlier statement that the proposal isn't anything new, its just the status quo b) You're much more likely to be succesful. It's a damn sight easier to support a proposal to subsidise genuine Registered Charities, than the collection of odds and sods currently in org.au, asn.au, etc. But now you're moving into the territory I suggested in my earlier email - i.e. create a new chr.au 2LD for Registered Charities only. Put the proposal together, and submit it to auDA with a proposed fee structure that auDA charges the lump-sum fee only, and no per-domain fee as long as the Registry and Registrars for chr.au domain names charge no fees. And see what happens. > obviously there are issues to work through, though I don't see these as insurmountable Me neither. But its going to take serious work and hard decisions to get a proposal worth supporting.
