Hello Jo and Chris, On 8 May 2001, the auDA Board approved the general recommendations of the Names Policy Advisory Panel with regard to the name spaces in ".au". Now that auDA has received the delegation for ".au" from IANA, it would now be appropriate to begin to finalise the new names policy rules that are derived from the recommendations of the Names Policy Advisory Panel. Melbourne IT had initially hoped to begin to refine the ".com.au" rules in consultation with the industry to reflect the recommendations of the names Panel for immediate implementation, but have waited at the request of auDA until the new competition model is about to be implemented. auDA now has the opportunity to refine all the rules for the second level domains at the same time. I would like to see these rules released for public comment in the same way that we have had the opportunity to comment on the documents that are derived from the competition model advisory panel. Given the release of the draft registrar agreement and the requirement of registrars, resellers, and registrants to comply with these rules - it would be appropriate to get the rules specified and refined. With respect to the intent to open up ".id.au" for registration at the third level, some more information on the type of rules would help an organisation putting in a tender for ".id.au", or ".id.au" in conjunction with one or more other second level domains, to assess the business model for the registry.
