Sure, I can understand that, but starting fresh with a .biz
type release of .au would be better than the proposed auctioning
of previously restricted .com.au domains

I simply think that auctioning domains is distasteful and not
in anyone's best interest unless you happen to have the cash
to bid more than anyone else.

I await some viewpoints on this.

We have debated this from time to time in .nz also.

If one had never had 2LDs it could be a good idea but it would be
chaotic to try to bring it at a late stage.

Beyond doubt every person who has domainname.com.au would want
domainname.au. So you would effectively force several hundred
thousand companies to register an additional name.

Also what about when you have conflicts between say domainname.com.au
and domainname.org.au and they both want domainname.au - who gets it?

The problems are not insoluble but they seem to generate more hassles
that anything they solve.
