i did some checking, on the largest ISPs in this country, on whether the
(caching) nameservers they tell their customers to use can actually tell
me where ".aus" lives.

i tested against the caching nameservers of
 (a) Telstra Internet,
 (b) Telstra Big Pond Home,
 (c) Telstra Big Pond Business,
 (d) Telstra Big Pond Cable.
 (e) OzEMail,
 (f) Access One,
 (g) Connect.com.au (and Enternet),
 (h) Magnadata,
 (i) iiNet,
 (j) Wantree,
 (k) Microplex,
 (l) SENet,
 (m) Internode.

(i got the nameservers they tell their customers from their respective support
web pages).

Do you want to know how many of their nameservers came back with an
answer?  (or even a hint?)

NONE.

I think this'd cover a rather significant percentage (at least 40%,
probably more like 60-80%) of the dialup internet users in this country.

it would seem that larry's comment holds true . . .
