This Press Release just went out and may be of interest... Leni. ############### Press Release 24 October 1997 The Council of Registrars (CORE). CORE announces the signing of a letter of intent with Emergent Corporation (http://www.emergent.com) for the development and operation of the Shared Registry System (SRS). The SRS is the neutral, shared database repository that co-ordinates registrations from CORE registrars and causes names to enter the global Internet Domain Name System (DNS). Emergent and CORE expect to have a final contract signed on or before 1 Nov 1997. The proposed contract terms involve Emergent operating the SRS for a renewable term of one year. CORE is the entity comprising registrars selected under the gTLD-MOU process: http://www.gtld-mou.org. Formed on October 3, CORE now comprises more than 73 registrars actively working towards deploying structures for the administration and enhancement of the DNS. The gTLD-MOU proposes the addition of seven new generic Top Level Domains: .firm, .store, .web, .arts, .rec, .info, and .nom. The overall plan balances requirements for competition among registrars with public oversight of registration activities. Public interest concerns are addressed by the Policy Oversight Committee (POC), comprising distinushed members of the internet community. POC is assisted by a Policy Advisory Body, comprising signatories to the Memorandum of Understanding. The existing top level domains for each nation, such as .au for Australia, .br for Brazil and .uk for the United Kingdom are not be affected. The full text of documents relating to the new generic Top Level Domains and CORE may be found at the web sites: http://www.gtld-mou.org and http://www.core.gtld-mou.org ###############Received on Mon Oct 27 1997 - 12:17:28 UTC
